On 27 October, the Oxford Brazilian Society had the honour of welcoming a distinguished delegation from the State of Goiás, Brazil, accompanied by an inspiring group of public-school students recognised as top performers in the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad.
The delegation included the First Lady of Goiás, Dona Gracinha, the Secretary of Social Development, Mr Wellington Matos, Renata Di Giacomo, Chief of Staff of the Social Policies Office, and Cejanne Gonçalves Ribeiro, Manager of Public Policies for Youth, among other representatives committed to advancing educational opportunities in Brazil.
The visit began at Pembroke College, where the students engaged in an exchange of ideas with Brazilian researchers based at Oxford, including Dr David Sidarta, originally from Goiás, Dr Beatriz Arruda and Luckeciano Melo, both members of the OUBS. The discussions provided valuable insights into academic life, scientific research, and pathways to international collaboration.
In the afternoon, the group toured Oxford’s scientific landmarks, concluding with an exclusive visit to the Oxford University History of Science Museum, opened especially for the occasion.
This visit celebrated the pursuit of knowledge and the transformative power of education. It was a privilege to host such talented students and dedicated leaders, whose work continues to strengthen the bridge between Brazil and the University of Oxford.
