Pre-COP30

COP30 will take place in Belém, Brazil—the first time a Climate COP is hosted in a tropical country and in the heart of the hashtag#Amazon.

This milestone spotlights Brazil’s historic leadership in global environmental action, from the landmark 1992 Earth Summit in Rio to today’s urgent climate challenges.

For the first time, the University of Oxford’s COP delegation will be led by Brazilian researchers: Dr Erika Berenguer and Dr Aline Soterroni, serving as Head and Deputy Head of Delegation. They will host a side event focusing on Brazil’s priorities — including net-zero strategies, biodiversity conservation, preventing deforestation, and managing forest fires.

The delegation will also include Cláudia Coleoni, OUBS Secretary, whose doctoral research explores water governance in the Amazon. Cláudia will co-lead a side event on water- and climate-resilient sociobioeconomies for the region.

Earlier this week, on October 29th, Erika and Aline led pre-COP30 dialogues at the Oxford Martin School featuring Antonio Patriota, Brazil’s Ambassador to the UK and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Fernando Bastos, a Brazilian diplomat and Head of the Environment, Climate, and Energy Section at the Embassy of Brazil in London.

This year’s COP has been called the COP of implementation — a call for a global mutirão (a Tupi-Guarani term meaning “a community coming together to work on a shared task”).
