Get together - 2020

Dinner at Balliol, 08/03/2020 – Week 8 Hilary

Ever wondered how it would be to eat at the oldest College of the University of Oxford? Well, the members of the Brazilian society went there to check it out and had a lovely dinner to celebrate the end of Hilary Term.

We were welcomed by the beautiful magnolia tree just before the entrance of the astonishing 19th-century Hall, where College members eat, both formally and informally. With a vaulted ceiling, portraits on the walls and candles by night, this traditional college setting makes a magnificent venue for all meals. A buffet-style dinner was served and we were able to witness a Balliol tradition of hitting the spoons on the table to announce the entrance of the Professors, who sit on the High Table.

Oh yes, we wouldn’t miss it for the world.

This February, OUBS brought to Oxford a taste of the world’s largest outdoor party. Hundreds of people joined us for an incredible night to celebrate this part of Brazilian culture.

The party brought together the members of the Society who helped with song suggestions, decorating the place and doing glitter make-up to get everybody in the Carnaval spirit. The party started at 9pm and finished at 2am with a full house all night long. It was a night of joy, happiness and a lot of dance.

Before the party, the OUBS joined the “No means no ” campaign reminding everyone that although carnival has a joyful and free-wheeling atmosphere it is by NO means a time to be disrespectful. Clothes, costumes, dance moves are not an invitation for sexual assualt, and sexual harassment cannot be justified as flirtatious banter. We wanted everybody to feel free to wear whatever they want and express who they are in the best possible way. We are a culture that loves laughing, welcoming and dancing and we hope everybody could enjoy that.

In the end the party was a huge success and we want to give a huge thanks to everyone who came to celebrate Brazilian Carnaval with us! Thanks a ton to our lovely team and to all of you helped us throughout the night. We couldn’t have done it without you. And finally thanks to FREVD who welcomed us and made it possible for us to feel a bit closer to Brazil.

Muito obrigada!

Jericho Tavern

On Thursday 23 January, keeping the tradition we started the previous term, we had our first get together of Hilary Term. We met at Jericho Tavern to kick off the new term the best way.

A bastion of up and coming musical talent, The Jericho Tavern has hosted an array of live bands who have gone on to become influential acts , including Radiohead, who played their first gig at the pub in 1986, and Supergrass, who secured a record deal after playing there in 1994. Quite an exciting place to be.
